President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday announced that the Wa Polytechnic was to be re-named after Ghana's Third Republican President, Dr Hilla Limann.

However, the proposal for the change of name of the polytechnic would need Parliamentary approval, and when that process is completed, the institution would be referred to as the Hilla Liman Polytechnic.

President Akufo-Addo made the disclosure at a commemorative event in Accra to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the demise of Dr Hilla Limann.

The remembrance event, organized by the family of the late statesman, was attended by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, some government functionaries and a host of dignitaries, as well as people from all walks of life.

President Akufo-Addo disclosed that the proposal for the re-naming of the Wa Polytechnic was made by the Governing Council of the institution and when it was brought to his notice by the Education Minister, he approved their decision.
“The Minister of education approached me on this and I have indicated my happy agreement to this proposal. Once parliamentary processes are completed, the Wa Polytechnic will henceforth be called Dr Hilla Limann Polytechnic,” he noted.

President Akufo-Addo said when all polytechnics across the country are converted into technical universities as a matter of government's policy, the Hilla Limann name would still remain.

He assured that the widow of Dr Limann and the family of government's support, saying Mrs Fulera Liman "who continues to conduct herself with dignity as befits a former first lady of Ghana, will continue to benefit from the care and attention of government."

Eulogising Dr Hilla Limann, the President described him as a "wonderful, decent, honest and patriotic statesman who did his best to overcome considerable odds."

“Ill-fated as his presidency was, he died with the reputation and memory of a decent, honest, patriotic man, who did his best.

President Akufo-Addo praised Dr Limann's achievements during his short tenure as head of state in a period of instability and disorder in the country following a military upheaval.

He said Dr Limann continued to show his mettle as a patriotic citizen even after the overthrow of the third republic, choosing not to flee the country but sat and offered his counsel on constitutionality and to rebuild the broken fibre of the nation.

Noting that the political party Dr Limann founded in 1992, the Peoples National Congress (PNC) was still an active participant in the political discourse of our nation, the President government had found it fitting to appoint Dr Edward Mahama, the flag bearer of the party in the 2016 general election as an Ambassador-at-large, a task that the latter was discharging creditably.
