The West African Examination Council(WAEC) has finally agreed to organise another Basic Education Certificate Examination(BECE) within this year for candidates who missed some papers in the 2017 exams.

This follows a directive by the Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court, to WAEC to organise the exams for some 200 candidates of the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District of the Northern region unable to write two papers, English and Religious and Moral Education, because of a change in venue, which was not communicated to their schools in time.

WAEC had initially refused to heed calls to hold the exams for the pupils insisting they would have an opportunity to resit in 2018.

But a civil society group Child Rights International(CRI), which dragged them to court was of the view that, the long wait at home could have negative effects on the children ahead of the exams, especially when missing the exam was by no fault of theirs.

Bright Appiah, Executive Secretary of CRI in an interview with Citi News said, there is a general understanding of the issue and the parties involved have resorted to looking at how best to deal with the situation.

"Certain procedures were established in terms of how to deal with the issue for the children to be protected. It looks positive in terms of the opportunity to be given to the children," he stated.

The good news he said, is that they have all agreed to what would be in the interest of the children and the country at large.
