It's the month of love and Valentine's Day is here. In this post we share some benefits of being in a romantic relationship, backed by scientific research.

Psychologists have known for a long time that being in secure relationships make us happier, healthier and more productive. "Perceived benefits and costs of romantic relationships for women and men: Implications for exchange theory" is a study published by three professors in 1994. They are Constantine Sedikides and W. Keith Campbell, from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and Mary Beth Oliver, from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

The results of their investigation demonstrated that the major benefits of romantic relationships are:

  1. Companionship or Affiliation
  2. Feeling of Happiness or Elation
  3. Exclusivity (The state of being in a relationship with someone where you are officially boyfriend and girlfriend, and there is no-one else involved)
  4. Feeling Loved or Loving Another
  5. Intimacy (Include mutual understanding, trust, and sharing)
  6. Self-Growth and Self-Understanding
  7. Expertise in Relationships
  8. More Positive Self-Esteem (include higher self-respect and self-confidence)
  9. Sexual Gratification
  10. Feeling Secure
  11. Learning About Other Sex
  12. Social Support from Partner's Friends or Relatives

So if you want to improve your well-being, find that special someone. Romance makes us happy! Happy Valentine!
