You would be forgiven to have thought businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome has paid to the state GH¢51m as directed by Ghana’s Apex court but three years on the man has defied all the odds and has still not made good his debt.

It is this failure on the part of Woyome who is also tagged NDC financier that the NPP’s Atta Akyea has resigned himself to the fate that the National Democratic Congree (NDC) is unenthused about recovering the funds which could be used to execute varied projects.

He told Joy News “I am afraid I do not see them retrieving the money, it is sad indeed.”

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South constituency in the Eastern region opined on Wednesday that any talk of recovering the funds before November’s general elections should be treated with the contempt such talk deserves adding “after three years? What are you going to do in November when the whole energies of government are to contest this election?”

Former Attorney-General, Martin Amidu in his private capacity championed the case in court that government had to retrieve the monies on behalf of citizens but despite the Supreme Court ruling on June 14, 2013 that Waterville Holdings, which was allegedly involved in the construction of some stadia ahead of the hosting of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, was wrongfully paid €25m and thus must refund the money, government has not displayed commitment in pursuing Waterville and Mr. Woyome who both benefitted from the payments despite a pledge by the latter to pay before last year concluded.

Meanwhile President John Mahama has explained private citizen Abdulai Yusif Fanash Muhammed has filed a suit claiming the Supreme Court had no jurisdiction in pronouncing judgment on the case demanding quashing of the judgement.

He added at the press conference on January 12, 2016 that his government’s hand is tied because of the legalities.
