The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed its approval of the public apology made by the Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Safo.
The legislator who faced criticism due to her prolonged absence from parliament, which led to calls for her seat to be declared vacant, last week apologised for her actions.
Reacting to this, National Chairman of NPP Stephen Ntim described the Dome-Kwabenya MP's public apology to the party and her constituents as appropriate and in order.
According to him, Adwoa Safo did what was required of her (with her apology) and the party welcomed it.
“Adwoa Safo’s apology is in order; I really support her objective because she knows the NPP is the only party she belongs to. So, she is doing what is expected of her, I mean the apology and all that,” Chairman Ntim said.
However, he clarified that the ultimate decision regarding Adwoa Safo’s candidacy for the parliamentary seat and her potential return as a Member of Parliament lies in the hands of the party delegates and the constituents of Dome-Kwabenya.
“If the constituents accept her to be an MP once again despite all that has gone on, I as Chairman and the rest of the party leadership will back her with our spirits to become an MP. So, her fate rests in the hands of Dome-Kwabenya delegates, from polling station to the constituency level,” Chairman Ntim affirmed.
Adwoa Safo on Thursday, September 14 issued an unqualified apology to the NPP leadership, specifically to President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare for her recent behavior.
The former Deputy Majority Leader also sought forgiveness from the Majority Caucus, as well as from the party's regional and constituency executives.
Speaking in Twi he said, "I am using this opportunity to apologise to all of you. In the not-too-distant past, some of my conduct [was not appropriate]. I want to assure you all that it was not deliberate, and it was my intention to disrespect you.
"A lot of things were going on in my life and in the life of my family. I am asking you all, in the name of God, to forgive me my actions," she said.
She urged all her constituents to forgive her actions.
The lawmaker in 2022 absented herself from Parliament for almost a year.
She attributed her long absence from Parliament to family issues, saying, among other things, that her son was unwell.
