A former Senior Lecturer of the University of Ghana and the Chief Convener of the Coalition for Democratic Governance (CDG), a pressure group, Dr Ebenezer Kofi Hayford, says Nana Akufo Addo made Ghana “a new monarchical republic of Ghanaâ€.
According to him, in President Akufo-Addo’s government more than two-thirds of his appointees in charge of relevant positions are either clan relatives of the president or family friends.
According to him, “this is the first time Ghana is experiencing a government of the sortâ€, hence describing President Akufo-Addo’s presidency as “new monarchical Republic of Ghanaâ€.
Speaking at a press conference on the theme “Protecting the Public Purse Indeedâ€, Dr Ebenezer Hayford said apart from the Akufo-Addo-led government creating “absurd ministries with over bloated expendituresâ€, adding, the huge monetary allocation to the presidency for compensations, goods and services and capital expenditure is nothing but wasteful.

He continued that “it does not make sense for the presidency to have more budgetary allocations than key ministries such as the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Trade and Industries, and Ministry of Works and Housingâ€.
“It is absurd to have a concentration of expenditure at the presidency while students are suffering in Senior High Schoolsâ€, Dr Hayford said.
Ghana is bleeding from corruption
The chief convener of the group also said Ghana is bleeding and we must stop itâ€.
According to him, “the over bloated expenditure of the Ministry of Special Development Initiative, for instance, was putting undue pressure on the Ghanaian taxpayerâ€.
He continued that the Ministry of Special Development Initiative, for instance, was not necessary since it performs some basic functions of other existing ministries.
In referencing the 110 appointees by the President, by the Akufo-Addo-led administration, he emphasized that such a colossal appointment was only overburdening the public purse, adding that even countries that are three times the size of Ghana do not have 110 ministers.

Dr Hayford, however, cautioned the government to cut down the 110 minsters so they could push more money into more productive areas, such as the government’s flagship programme, the Free Senior High School.
