Suspended founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe has accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of hiding behind the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) to persecute Ibrahim Mahama.

Mr Mahama, CEO of Engineers & Planners and younger brother of former President John Mahama was on Tuesday invited by the EOCO over some dud cheques he issued to the Custom divisions of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) at the Tema ports as payment for to clear some heavy duty equipment he imported into the country.

Apart from being asked to report himself regularly at the EOCO offices, Ibrahim's passport was also seized until further notice.

But according to Dr Nyaho Tamakloe who is an uncle to Ibrahim, the invitation was nothing but a clear case of a political witch hunt and vindictive persecution coming from the president.

For him, the investigation was inconsistent with democratic parties and rule of law and thus surprised that President Akufo-Addo whom he had held as a true democrat will let it happen under his watch.

“What surprises me is that this is happening under the nose of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo—somebody I sacrificed my life for and he knows it. That is what surprises me but I wouldn’t like to talk much on that. Because I have also held him until recently one of the true democrats. But if this can happen under his nose then I can think we are in a different era,” he said.

He described the seizure of his nephew’s passport as “vindictive, malicious persecution reminiscent in the PNDC days over thirty years ago", adding that “The prejudicial comment against Ibrahim are inconsistent with democratic parties and rule of law [and that] they are more consistent with what we saw in the PNDC days when entrepreneurs were declared guilty before trial.”
