Tamale North Member of Parliament Alhassan Suhuyini has revealed that he is the only member on the Appointments Committee who voted against the nomination of Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor.
The revelation comes to contradict the report that the committee unanimously approved Martin Amidu’s nomination after the seven-hour vetting. As reported earlier by Prime News
Suhuyini who spoke on Accra based Joy FM explained that even though the citizen vigilante qualifies to occupy the office he is simply not suitable.
“With the vetting of Martin Amidu, all minority members on the committee voted for him, all majority members voted for him but I voted against him. I think that he’s very competent for the office but I don’t think he is suitable,â€
Meanwhile, Mr Amidu believes he is the right person to occupy the Office of the Special Prosecutor since he has been a very meticulous man throughout his public office life “and that is why if you want anybody who will be meticulous in investigating and prosecuting, the president has made the best choice for you.â€
On Tuesday, February 13, Martin A.B.K Amidu appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee to be vetted, despite a lawsuit challenging his nomination.
The vetting lasted for over 7 hours with the Special prosecutor answering over 180 questions. It appears to be the longest vetting session for a single individual in Parliament.
NDC MP Dr Dominic Ayine has sued the State challenging the eligibility of Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor nominee due to his age.
Dr Dominic Ayine, who is the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Bolgatanga East, is praying the Supreme Court to halt the appointment because 66-year-old Amidu is gone past the retirement age for public office holders.
