Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has expressed concern over growing tensions and unhealthy competition between Members of Parliament (MPs) and District Chief Executives (DCEs) in the region, warning that the development is negatively impacting local governance and community development.
Speaking to journalists in Kumasi on Monday, October 6, 2025, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized that the strained relationships between the two groups of local leaders are slowing down the execution of critical projects and disrupting essential coordination at the district level.
He referred to the situation as both “unhealthy” and counterproductive, urging a shift towards greater collaboration to enable the smooth implementation of government initiatives.
“The growing rivalry between MPs and DCEs is negatively affecting the approval and disbursement of the District Assemblies Common Fund, which is crucial for funding development projects in the region,” Dr. Amoakohene stated. He noted that personal conflicts between the two groups have often led to a withholding of support for one another’s initiatives, further stalling progress.
“In some cases, these rivalries have led to MPs using the District Assemblies Common Fund as a means of settling personal scores, which is detrimental to the region’s growth,” he remarked.
The Minister also highlighted poor communication as a significant factor exacerbating the problem. In several districts, MPs and DCEs have failed to align their efforts or engage in meaningful dialogue, leading to unnecessary friction and confusion. This disconnect has delayed the roll-out of vital government programs, further impeding development in the region.
Dr. Amoakohene added, “In some districts, the lack of understanding and communication between MPs and DCEs means that vital initiatives from the assemblies are either ignored or misunderstood. This attitude is not only unhelpful but harmful to the effective functioning of local governance.”
The Regional Minister called for a united front from both MPs and DCEs, urging them to prioritize cooperation over competition. He emphasized that local governance can only thrive when all stakeholders work together in harmony, with a shared commitment to advancing the region’s development agenda.
“We cannot afford to allow political rivalry to undermine the progress of the Ashanti Region,” Dr. Amoakohene concluded. “The people of the region deserve better. It’s time for MPs and DCEs to put aside their differences and work in the best interest of their constituents.”
