The Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has denied allegations that he incited residents of Hwidiem to attack security personnel from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) during a recent incident in the Ahafo Region.

He described the reports as false and said his actions helped prevent the situation from escalating.

In a statement, Mr. Addo explained that the incident happened on November 1, 2025, while he was on his way to attend a funeral in Acherensua.

He said he contacted the Asutifi South MP, Collins Dauda, who was outside the country at the time, and was asked to represent him.

According to Mr. Addo, he noticed growing tension when he got to Hwidiem and was told that a military operation was underway at a gold mining site. After informing Mr. Dauda, he went to the scene with his constituency vice chairman and driver to assess the situation and help communicate with the military team.

He said he advised that everyone move to the police station to make an official report and hand over any items or suspects to the police to prevent the situation from worsening.

“When we got to the police station, the main road had been blocked, stopping vehicles from moving. Together with the military, regional police officers, NIB operatives, and the Kenyasi Police Commander, we stayed at the charge office while statements were taken,” he explained.

Mr. Addo said he later invited the Zongo Chief of Hwidiem to help calm tensions, and the chief agreed to transport the military officers in his Toyota Sequoia after their pickup was damaged. However, the chief’s vehicle was later attacked and its rear glass smashed.

“I had already left to attend other funerals in Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Wamahinso by that time,” the MP said. “At no point did I incite the youth against security officers or government operations. I did everything I could to maintain peace.”

He expressed disappointment that the police report did not acknowledge his role in restoring calm and urged the public to ignore what he called false accounts meant to damage his reputation.

Mr. Addo assured his constituents and the public of his continued commitment to maintaining peace and supporting the work of security agencies in the area.
