The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that Umar Sanda has forfeited his membership of the party after deciding to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election as an independent candidate.
In a letter dated February 17, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC said Umar Sanda’s decision to run independently is in direct breach of the party’s constitution.
According to the letter, the party had taken note of his intention to contest the March 3 by-election outside the NDC, despite the party having duly elected and endorsed a candidate for the race.
“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have, in accordance with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution, automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter stated.
The party further notified Umar Sanda that he is prohibited from using the NDC’s name, logo, colours, symbols or any other intellectual property associated with the party in the course of his campaign or related political activities.
The Ayawaso East by-election is scheduled for March 3, 2026.
