Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has joined the campaign trail in the Akwatia Constituency ahead of Tuesday’s by-election, urging residents to throw their support behind the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
Dr Bawumia, who was in the constituency on Friday for the one-week observation of the late MP Ernest Kumi, returned on Sunday to rally voters for the NPP.
His campaign began with church visits where he introduced the party’s candidate to congregants, praising his qualities and commitment to the community.
As part of his activities, Dr Bawumia also paid a courtesy call on the Kusiman Hene, Nana Ntiamoah Kusi Boadu, alongside Mr Asumadu. He later toured a number of communities in the constituency, meeting residents and canvassing support.
Addressing the gatherings, the former Vice President appealed to constituents to vote massively for the NPP candidate in order to sustain the development drive of the late MP.
“I urge you to support Solomon Kwame Asumadu so that together we can continue the good works and legacy of our beloved Ernest Kumi,” he said.
The Akwatia by-election was triggered by the sudden passing of Ernest Kumi, and has since become a fiercely contested race with both major political parties working to secure victory.
Candidates
A 40-year old licensed small-scale miner, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, aka Owusu, is contesting the parliamentary seat to replace the late Ernest Kumi, while a legal practitioner, Bernard Bediako, is trying to reclaim the seat for the NDC.
The NDC and the NPP are the only parties which have filed nominations to contest the crucial by-election.
