Personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service have stormed the residence of the former technical adviser at the Energy Ministry, Francis Gyata, and seized his laptop and other devices in connection with investigations into the $510 million AMERI deal.
The search by the CID personnel was conducted on Tuesday, July 25.

Speaking on JoyFm, Mr Gyata said he was not worried about the actions of the security personnel because they conducted the search in a responsible and manner.

He is however of the view the actions was unnecessary, “I’m not a decision maker I was supposed to implement a project and I have done that for my country and I think this is just a wild goose chase.”

The Ameri deal was a contract signed between the Government of Ghana and Ameri Energy during the power crisis for the supply of gas turbines to Ghana. It was to provide additional power to the national grid to ease the debilitating load shedding exercise that plagued the country at the time.

The New Patriotic Party administration after assumption of office set-up a 17-member committee to investigate the agreement over claims it was inflated to the tune of $150million.

Explaining the deal to JoyFM, Mr Gyata said the Ameri project was done for $360million but Ameri is a developer and the circumstance was just like buying a car on hire purchase. "For instance, if you get a Land Cruiser for $100,000 and you don’t have the money today and you want to buy it through the bank, it might cost you twice the amount by the time you finish paying for it over three years and basically, that is what Ameri is."

He revealed that the plant becomes Ghana’s after 60 months.

The raid of the technical director's house comes a day after the residence of the former Power Minister Dr. Kwabena Donkor was searched by the CID in connection with the same Ameri deal.
