Managing Editor of The Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr believes allegations of corruption and misconduct being levelled against the Electoral Commission Chairperson will dent the credibility of the Electoral Commission(EC).

According to Mr Pratt, who was speaking on Peace FM, the current development at the EC is scary and could jeopardize the confidence reposed in the institution by Ghanaians.

Some aggrieved workers of the EC, have petitioned the government to remove the EC Chairperson Charlotte Osei citing allegations of corruption and misconduct. The EC Chair has described the allegations as frivolous, lies and without merit and has instructed her lawyers to take legal action against the petitioners for defamation.

Mr Pratt noted "before the petition case, there were issues of money spent on the EC boss, to build a new office complex as well as investigations on financial conducts of some officers by the Economic and Organized Crime Office(EOCO). These are issues that, if not managed will affect the credibility of the EC," he stated.

With all the development he said, the credibility of the EC, organiser of Ghana's elections would be in doubt which would subsequently affect the nation's democracy.

He added that, there is also a possibility that, some members of the EC including the Chairperson would be removed for new officers to be appointed.

"Let us not get to the position that three EC members would be removed and provide the opportunity for the government to appoint members including a new boss," he stated.

Mr Pratt said, he believes that there are two factions in the EC that are causing the ongoing misunderstanding in their quest to achieve their separate objectives.

"These factions could use any political party in their quest to achieve their goals and objectives. It would be in the interest of politicians not to be allowed to be used for such purposes," he stated.

The most important thing he said, would be for the government to ensure that the EC maintains it credibility for the entire nation to trust the electoral process.
