Delta Force, a vigilante group linked to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has attacked a circuit court in Kumasi and freed 13 of its members who were standing trial, according to a report by Accra-based Citi FM.

The 13 were on trial for assaulting the Ashanti Regional coordinator, George Adjei, and booting him out of his office a few weeks ago.

The trial judge, Mary Senkyire, reportedly ruled that they be remanded in police custody to reappear before court on April 20.

But the ruling, according to the report, angered the Delta Force members who were in court.

Vowing that they would not let the ruling stand, members of the group are said to have angrily destroyed court property and then freed the suspects.

They attempted to beat the judge but police personnel quickly whisked Madma Senkyire into her chambers, the report said.

The lawless act follows comments by the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah, that groups like Delta Force and Invisible Forces did not exist because they were not registered.

He said the groups were merely action groups of party foot soldiers who were perpetuating violence and molesting Ghanaians.

The minister, however, pledged decisive action to get rid the country of such elements.

“There are no legally registered vigilante groups in this country and for that matter, there are no such groups to be disbanded. However, I think we need to be pragmatic and accept that foot soldiers of the leading political parties are known to constitute themselves into action troops to molest and unleash violence on the peace loving people of this country.

“Mr. Speaker we need to stop these groups because they have the tendency to degenerate into militant groups that can have serious repercussions on the security of this country. We must not mix criminality with politics, lawlessness must be punished", he said.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has also pledged to deal with such groups, stressing that their conduct was against the law.

“There are a few things, Delta [Force] and other issues that are unpleasant, but we are working to deal with those issues to ensure peace and understanding in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, and the whole country.

“I will not ignore such issues. The law applies to everyone in Ghana. I know it is of concern to you, but do not worry, we will ensure that everything is resolved,” the president told Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in Kumasi.
