The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has alleged that Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the party's 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
According to the NPP, Miracles Aboagye was picked up by EOCO officers at the Accra International Airport with the assistance of immigration officials.
In a Facebook post, the party's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, claimed that Mr Aboagye was taken into custody without any charges being communicated to him.
Justin Kodua further alleged that Mr Aboagye's lawyers had been denied access to him and that his whereabouts were unknown.
He called on the authorities to grant Miracles unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, citing the provisions of Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution on the rights of persons in custody.
The NPP General Secretary described the arrest as intimidation rather than a lawful enforcement action, alleging that it forms part of a pattern of politically motivated invitations, arrests and detentions targeting members of the party.
Justin Kodua cautioned state institutions against being used as political tools, insisting that public agencies must operate within the limits of the law and uphold constitutional protections.
He, however, urged NPP members to remain calm, lawful and united while the party seeks clarity on the circumstances surrounding Miracles’ arrest.
