The Gender and Social Protection Minister, Nana Oye Lithur has stated that though she was not a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) before her appointment, President John Mahama's leadership qualities have made her become a fully fledged member of the ruling party.

Though her husband, Tony Lithur is a lawyer to President John Mahama, Nana Oye was not a known supporter of the NDC and her appointment was heavily criticised by the party's grassroots which led the President to defend her appointment saying it was purely based on merit.

Speaking to Kasapa FM's Maame Broni, she said, "I am part of NDC now. I was not part of the NDC when I was appointed as a minister. Everything is making me part of the NDC now. The social democratic principles, the leadership in President Mahama, the social development agenda, the people-oriented agenda and the team, that is what has made me become a part of the NDC".

According to her, she is now an active member of the ruling party and ready to campaign for the second term bid of the President.

The Gender ministry was created to coordinate and better implement social intervention programmes aimed at safety nets for the poor and vulnerable in society and to compile a database for the sector and also to track the effect of government's social intervention programmes on its targets and Oye Lithur with her experience as a lawyer at the Commonwealth Human Rights Institute (CHRI) was  deemed to be a good fit to work with the vulnerable in society.
