Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed concern that the leadership of the New Patriotic Party has neglected him.
He made these remarks in a conversation with Abetifi MP and flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong.
According to him, he fails to understand why, as someone who brought the NPP into office for two terms, he would be ignored on sensitive party matters and decisions.
“I don’t understand why my own party, the NPP, has sidelined me,” the former president said.
The statesman, who led Ghana from 2001 to 2008 and remains one of the most influential figures in the party’s history, said he finds it troubling that the current NPP leadership appears to have distanced itself from him, despite his significant role in shaping the party's legacy and bringing it to power.
Mr Kufuor revealed that he had even been excluded from a recent meeting of the NPP National Council, a key decision-making body that plays a crucial role in determining the party's future direction.
The snub, he said, reflects a wider disregard for the contributions and wisdom of the party's founding figures.
“Have I deteriorated to the point where, after being fed, I’d claim I haven’t eaten? No—I haven’t reached that stage yet. My mind and memory are intact,” he said firmly.
His comments come at a moment of heightened tension within the NPP, as the party navigates internal divisions ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The contest for leadership, especially the flagbearership, has led to the emergence of multiple factions, raising concerns over unity, transparency, and the respect accorded to party veterans.
