The Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor is embarrassing Ghana in the international circles with his threats of banning social media during the December 7 polls, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has stated.

Mr Kudalor, during a media briefing about four months ago, indicated that if need be, the police administration would block social media on the eve and on elections day.

His comment received a lot of media attention leading President John Mahama, at the launch of the National Democratic Congress' 2016 Campaign, to contradict the IGP's  statement that  “government has no intention to shut down social media on election day.”

As the matter was thought to have died, Mr Kudalor, during an interaction with National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu and some Muslim leaders, has reiterated his call social media ban on election day if users post information that will threaten the peace of the country.

According to him, the citizens have so far not given the police reasons to block various social media platforms on elections day.

"So far, so good...whether we will shut it down or not, I don't want to go there, when we get to the bridge we will cross it but as at now, we have no intention to shut down social media if you continue to be good citizens," he indicated.

The IGP's suggestion, however, according to Mr Braimah should not be entertained because "the statement of shutting down social media by the IGP is causing an embarrassment to Ghana internationally".

Speaking on Class FM's Executive Breakfast Show on Tuesday, he said social media must not be shut down on election day and there should not be any debate it.

"The question of shutting down social media should not come in at all", he stated.
