The editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, has called for a "focused probe" into the Kintampo waterfalls disaster, which killed 20 people on Sunday.

Speaking on News File on Accra-based Joy FM on Saturday, Baako described the accident as a terrible disaster.

He said it was essential that an investigation was initiated to unravel what really went down at the tourism site.

He said the investigation would also shed light on the role of the Invincible Forces, the vigilante arm of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the tragedy.

The Invincible Forces have been accused of indirectly contributing to the disaster by failing to warm the tourists who were swimming in the water at the base of the waterfall of an impending storm.

Critics argue that if the vigilante group had not taken control of the facility after the NPP secured victory in the 2016 elections, the professionals who used to run the place would have taken the precautions necessary to preserve the lives of tourists who visit the place.

But Baako said an investigation was required to determine the role of the Invincible Forces in the entire saga.

The respected social commentator said it was especially important to ascertain whether the group replaced all the professionals at the facility or simply took over the top management functions at the place.

Baako cautioned against the politicising of the disaster, stressing that partisanship would not help the country get the answers it was seeking in terms of what caused the disaster.

The Kintampo disaster occurred on Sunday when a tree displaced by a storm fell on people who were swimming at the base of the waterfall.

The accident killed 20 people and injured many others.

Fifteen of those killed were students of the Wenchi Senior High School.
