President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a transitional management committee to oversee the formal transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) to the direct operational control of the University of Ghana.
The move is part of a broader strategy to align teaching, research, and clinical services under a unified institutional framework.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the nine-member committee on July 8, President Mahama stressed the importance of the handover in transforming UGMC into a world-class hospital.
“The next phase of our vision calls for the full integration of the UGMC into the University of Ghana’s governance and operational structures. This is not a mere administrative action, it is a strategic alignment designed to promote synergy between clinical service delivery teaching and research, to enhance institutional efficiency through harmonized leadership and resource management, to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between medical professionals, researchers and academics, and most importantly, to create a truly world-class teaching hospital that serves the needs of both Ghana and the wider West African sub-region,” the President said.
According to him, “To guide this transition process, I have constituted a transitional management committee co-chaired by two distinguished Ghanaians, Professor Aaron Lawson, a seasoned academic and former provost of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana, and Professor Mutawakilu Iddrisu, a renowned Korle Bu Teaching Hospital neurological specialist.”
The University of Ghana Medical Centre is a quaternary medical and research centre located on the campus of the University of Ghana in Accra.
The establishment of the University of Ghana Medical center was conceived by the faculty and administration of the University of Ghana and initiated under the Late President John Evans Atta-Mills.
