The Al-Hajj newspaper is reporting that former President John Mahama may defy his family and stage a political comeback in 2020.

The family of Mahama has told him to take some time off the political scene and refrain from contesting the 2020 election.

His younger brother, Ibrahim Mahama, told the media that the former president had been advised by the family to take a break from active politics.

“John has given his all in politics to NDC and Ghana and we think it is just fair that we allow him to rest. We were very supportive and instrumental in convincing him to partner late Prof Mills, and when the time came for him to contest for President, we supported him and advised him to go for it…now we have again advised him not to make a comeback in 2020,” he said.

Ibrahim added that although they sympathised with those who had called on Mahama to stand in 2020, it was important for people to respect the decision of the family to prevent their son from contesting.

According to the Al-Hajj report, however, Mahama is considering defying his family and yielding to the incessant calls for him to represent the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2020.

Mahama's dream of winning a second-term as president was dashed when Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) beat him in the 2016 presidential election.

The former president recently told members of his party not to be discouraged by the defeat, but to work hard to help the NDC recapture power in 2020.
