The Minority in Parliament today August 1 boycotted sitting because of what they call deliberate attempts to endanger the parliamentary procedure by the Speaker Prof. Mike Ocquaye.
They say their action is to protest against the Speaker referring a motion by K.T Hammond in relation to the AMERI deal to a committee of Parliament without allowing lawmakers to debate on the matter.
Speaking to the media, leader Haruna Iddrisu disclosed that the side had earlier signalled that they wanted to raise a constitutional objection to the motion but to their amazement, the motion was outrightly referred to the committee. Â
The former Deputy Minister of Energy and sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa, K.T. Hammond, wants Parliament to rescind the approval of the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer Agreement between the government and the Africa and Middle East Resources Investment Group (AMERI Energy) for the installation, operation, provision of support services and maintenance of 10 GE TM2,500+ aero derivative gas turbines.
He claims to have new evidence that the deal endorsed on March 20, 2015, is overly bloated
Haruna Idrisu is however of the view that this should not be done because it would be non-parliamentary for an MP to seek to rescind a decision by a previous Parliament.
He also claimed the opposition NDC MPs decision to walk out of the house is as a result of them  ‘being gagged and prevented’ from making contributions on the floor.
The Ameri deal is a $510 million contract signed between the Government of Ghana and Ameri Energy during the power crisis for the supply of gas turbines to Ghana. It was to provide additional power to the national grid to ease the debilitating load shedding exercise that plagued the country at the time.
