President, Nana Akufo-Addo has forwarded two petitions invoking the provisions of Article 146(3) of the Constitution, in respect of the office of the Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission, Georgina Opoku Amankwa and Amadu Sulley, respectively to the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo.

A statement from the presidency signed by the Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin on Friday said one Emmanuel Lorsi Senyo a concerned citizen of Ghana wants the two deputy chairs of the EC removed from office.

“President Akufo-Addo, pursuant to the terms of Article 146(3), has, thus, referred both petitions to the Chief Justice for resolution, in accordance with the provisions of Article 146(3),” the statement read.

The current development comes after the president referred a petition by some unknown staffs of the Electoral Commission (EC) calling for the impeachment of the EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei to the Chief Justice a few days ago.

The unknown EC staff in the petition called for a full-scale investigation into alleged misconduct and abuse of office by the Chairperson. They claimed her decision to cancel a contract awarded to Superlock Technologies Limited (STL) -- a company contracted to supply and manage Biometric Voter Registration machines (BVRs) and the Biometric Voter Devices (BVDs), as well as her directive for the payment of $76,000 to IT firm, Dream Oval, were fraudulent.

While the Chairperson is accusing some of her deputies of misconduct and perpetuating various forms of illegality, the deputies have also accused her of arbitrarily taking decisions without recourse to law.

The development has revealed deep seated divisions between Mrs Osei and her deputies and many Ghanaians are now questioning whether they can continue working together.
