Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea, has called on New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to prioritise maturity and diplomacy as they prepare to elect the party’s next flagbearer on January 31.

Addressing party supporters at Mpraeso in the Eastern Region, the senior lawyer cautioned delegates against selecting a candidate whose conduct could bring the country into disrepute on the global stage.

He stressed that Ghana’s image must remain intact at international platforms, particularly at gatherings such as the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr Atta Akyea underscored the need for a leader who demonstrates calmness, emotional control and statesmanship-qualities he believes are essential for engaging world leaders and representing the country effectively.

He warned delegates not to “make a mistake and elect someone who will insult world leaders when he travels to the United Nations”, insisting that the party must entrust its future to a candidate capable of safeguarding the nation’s diplomatic standing.

The upcoming presidential primary will determine who leads the NPP into the 2028 general election.

Out of the five aspirants, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former MP Kennedy Agyapong are widely regarded as the frontrunners.

Although Mr Atta Akyea made no mention of any candidate by name, his remarks have been interpreted by some observers as a veiled reference to Kennedy Agyapong.

The NPP Presidential Elections Committee has scheduled the internal poll for January 31, 2026.
