Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the New Patriotic Party to rally behind a unifying leader as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Addressing party supporters at the NPP’s 33rd Anniversary celebration in New York on Sunday, August 24, Dr. Bawumia emphasised that the party’s future hinges on a leadership style that brings people together not one that sows division.
“We need a leader whose style unites, not divides, one with vision, humility, integrity, calm under pressure, and a strong track record. These are the qualities Ghanaian voters are looking for,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia warned that internal divisions, especially along tribal or religious lines, not only harm party morale but also hand unnecessary advantages to opponents like the NDC.
He urged the NPP to stay focused on issues that matter to Ghanaians such as economic recovery, tax reform, agriculture, industry, infrastructure, and digitalisation as laid out in the party’s 2024 manifesto.
Refuting claims that ethnicity or religion caused the party’s poor showing in the last election, Dr. Bawumia pointed to clear voter data.
“We lost over two million votes between 2020 and 2024, mainly in key southern strongholds like Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern. The real issue was voter apathy, not identity politics.”
He called for renewed discipline, focus, and a return to the NPP’s founding ideals of unity in diversity.
“If we’re divided and constantly attacking each other, none of us can lead this party to achieve its purpose. There is no place for tribalism or religious bigotry in the NPP,” he stated.
“Let us come together, heal, and prepare to win in 2028.”
