Kennedy Agyapong has withdrawn from the ongoing NPP Thank You Tour following the stabbing of a KNUST student in the Ashanti Region.
The former presidential aspirant on the ticket of the NPP announced in Kumasi during a press conference on Wednesday morning, April 30.
In his speech, Mr Agyapong condemned the incident, describing it as "disturbing and unacceptable.''
He has promised to assist in investigations for the perpetrators to be brought to book.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has directed a full-scale investigation into the violence, which left the KNUST in critical condition.
Backgroud
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Bantama Pentecost Church during a gathering organised by supporters of the former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, as part of the ruling party’s ongoing regional tour.
Eyewitnesses say the victim, a member of the “Jama” group from Unity Hall (Conti) on the KNUST campus, had been hired to energise the event. During the programme, a wealthy associate of Mr Agyapong reportedly offered the group cash—only for a gang of gun-wielding men, believed to be affiliated with the NPP, to intervene and seize the money.
A scuffle ensued, gunshots were fired, and one of the “Jama” group members was stabbed multiple times. He was rushed to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he remains under intensive care.
Kennedy Agyapong’s team has since lodged a formal complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command. No arrests have been made so far.
The NPP has not yet commented on the incident.
