Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko, believes having too many presidential candidates may push the December 2016 polls into a run off.

According to the lecturer, no law prevents the Electoral Commission (EC) from granting licenses, adding that “even if any of the opposition parties excluding New Patriotic Party (NPP) get 3 percent or cumulatively accrue 3 percent they will throw the election into a run- off.”

According to the EC, it is set to grant licenses to eleven (11) political parties to add to the existing twenty- five (25) contesting this year’s elections since there is no limit to the number of parties the EC present with licenses.

The Electoral Commission has also indicated, there is the need to investigate the application of the eleven (11) parties on the waiting list adding that independent candidates do not need licenses to operate but only have to satisfy the conditions for the nomination.

Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko cautioned “if they (political parties) are not performing the role they ought to perform and they are not satisfying the minimum requirement then the EC must crack the whip.”
