Parliament has, through a head count, approved the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie as the Chief Justice of Ghana.

The approval took place on Thursday, November 13, 2025, with 163 Members of the majority voting in favour and 69 opposing.

During his vetting on Monday, Justice Paul Baffoe‑Bonnie told Parliament that he would ensure equal access to justice, address judicial delays, and implement reforms to improve efficiency.

He dismissed suggestions that his nomination was politically motivated, insisting it was based on merit and experience, and pledged to lead the judiciary with transparency, efficiency, and respect for the rule of law.

During the debate that preceded the vote, the Minority in Parliament opposed the approval, arguing that it should be delayed until ongoing legal matters involving the previous Chief Justice were concluded. Despite the objection, the motion was passed after a headcount confirmed a clear majority in support of the nominee.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served on the Supreme Court since 2008, will take over from Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

He is expected to be sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama in accordance with constitutional procedures.

The approval comes ahead of the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement today, Thursday November 13, 2025
