President Nana Akufo Addo appears to have given the strongest hints he may not contest the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Speaking to journalists at a media encounter at the seat of government on Tuesday, six months into his administration, the president said concerns have been raised by a section of the public, especially those operating illegal small mining schemes they will not retain him in office, but he is more than determined to do that which is right, no matter the consequences.
He said the issue of a re-election may not even come up either because he may not be on the ballot, or until the processes through the party’s own internal contest approve of him to lead them in the elections.
This is not the first time the president had given a similar hint, it is his second. During an engagement with traditional authorities over measures to combat illegal, President Akufo Addo made it clear he will not renege on his commitment to ensure activities that lead to the destruction of the country’s forests are addressed. He not only put his presidency on the line in doing so, but said the decision for him to contest will be determined by the party.
He is 72 at the moment and might be 75 years, something he himself alluded to when he said if “health†is on his side, he might contest.Â
