President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he will not be seeking a third term when Ghana goes to the polls in 2028.

President Mahama said that it would give him the free hand to avoid the perennial election year overspending.

“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” President Mahama stated.

He made this declaration in Singapore when he met the President of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, on his three-day State visit.

According to Mahama, his administration has already achieved progress with falling inflation and interest rates, alongside a stronger cedi.

He assured that he would hold the line in the run-up to the 2028 polls to sustain the gains to leave behind a stable economy for investments.

Per Article 66(1) of the 1992 Constitution, “A person elected as President shall…hold office for a term of four years beginning from the date he is sworn in as President”.

Article 66(2) adds that “A person shall not be elected to hold office as President of Ghana for more than two terms”.

His comments counter the claims by the New Patriotic Party that he plans to seek a third term beyond his final mandate.
