President Mahama grants amnesty to 998 prisoners

The President, John Dramani Mahama, has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners out of a total of 1014.

This follows a recommendation from the Prisons Service Council and consultation with the Council of State.

This was contained in a statement dated August 18, 2025, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications.

The statement said the amnesty was granted in accordance with Article 72 (1) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the President to grant pardons, reprieves, or commute sentences.

The beneficiaries fall under specific categories, including first-time offenders, the seriously ill, elderly convicts, nursing mothers, and inmates serving death or life sentences.

1. First Offenders – 787

2. Death row commuted to Life Imprisonment – 87

3. Life sentences to be commuted to 20 years definite term – 51

4. Seriously ill – 33

5. Over 70 years irresective of offence - 36

6. Nursing mothers - 2

7. Petitions - 2
