President John Dramani Mahama has mocked US President-elect, Donald J. Trump, for appearing to flip-flop on some key promises he made during campaigning ahead of the election.
Taking his turn at the Ghana Presidential Encounters 2016 organised by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in Accra on Wednesday, President Mahama said Trump’s pledge to build a wall on the US southern border had changed transformed into building fences in certain areas.
He said Trump had also softened his pledge to immediately deport 11 million illegal immigrants by saying that he would deport two million illegal “criminals†and that the remaining nine million were good people.
President Mahama’s remarks drew laughter from the scores of people seated in the auditorium.
He was making a case for Ghanaians to reject opposition politicians in the December elections.
According to him, politicians will promise “heaven†when they are in opposition, but will realise that the promises cannot be fulfilled when they win power.
President Mahama said he, as an opposition MP, had criticised former President JA Kufuor and wondered why the Kufuor was not moving quickly on some development issues.
The president said when he won power, however, reality struck him and he realised that it was not easy to lead.
He emphasized that he was able to rise to the challenges which confronted him and grow the economy, adding that Ghanaians should reward him with a second term.
