Barring any last minute extensions, the process of filing of nominations for presidential and parliamentary candidates with the Electoral Commission (EC) will close tomorrow.

The Commission, last week, confirmed that issued a total of 23 presidential nomination forms; 16 for political parties and seven for indidviduals.

But barely 24 hours to the deadline for submission, only six of the forms have been submitted by close of work 3pm on Thursday, primenewsghana has gathered.

The forms of the six; NPP's Nana Akufo-Addo, NDC's President John Mahama, APC's Hassan Ayariga, UPP's Akwasi Addai 'Odike', UFP's Agyenim Boateng, and IPP's Kofi Apaloo, were however received without their GHC50,000 filing fee due a pending suit filed by the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) challenging the legality of the EC’s decision to take the deposits.

The PPP on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 secured  an interlocutory injunction writ from the High Court seeking to restrain the EC “from collecting and or receiving a deposit of GHC50,000 and GHC10,000 from each presidential candidate and each parliamentary candidate as announced” by the EC on September 8, 2016.

The rejection of the filing fees, according EC Chairperson, Madam Charlotte Osei was to make sure the Commission did not commit any contempt of court.
