The editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, has expressed confidence in the ability of the Electoral Commission (EC) to hold the election on December 7.

The EC is fighting several law suits in court after it disqualified 13 candidates from contesting the December elections.

Two of the candidates – Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People‘s Party (PPP) and Hassan Ayariga of the All People’s Party (APC)- have successfully challenged the decision in court, galvanising other candidates to do the same.

For its part, the EC has gone to court to challenge the ruling by an Accra High Court which said that the PPP presidential candidate had been wrongly disqualified.

The situation has sparked fear in a section of the public that the back and forth between the commission and the candidates in court may affect the conduct of the election on December 7.

But speaking on News File on Accra-based Joy FM on Saturday, Mr Kweku Baako, said the EC was aware of the timeline and would keep to it.

He rejected suggestions that EC had deliberately instigated the law suits in order to manipulate the elections in favour of the National Democratic Congress.

“Some people are worried; some people think these litigations will derail the process [but] I don’t believe so. I’m confident that we are going to have the elections on December 7. I don’t believe in all those doomsday scenarios,” he said.

Mr Baako added that the EC had given the Supreme Court a deadline within which it would want the case to be decided so that it could proceed with the activities for the election.

That, he said, proved that the commission was committed to carrying out its responsibility to hold the elections on December 7.
