Ghana's national women's hockey team, the Black Sticks on Friday defeated arch-rival Nigeria in a tense affair in the hockey final at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch.

Following a 0-0 draw in regulation time, the game went into penalties and it was the host nation who emerged victorious.

The Black Sticks beat Nigeria 4-3 in the shootout to clinch gold.

This follows Ghana's goalkeeper Abigail Boye saving Nigeria's Jerry Aghalelosa's penalty, giving the host nation an edge over their counterparts.

Cecilia Amoako scored the next kick to win the day for Ghana.

Ghana's best performance before today's gold medal win was a fourth placed finish at the Abuja games in 2003.
