Equatorial Guinean striker Emilio Nsue, who clinched the top goalscorer at AFCON 2023, has announced his retirement from international football.

His retirement from the Equatorial Guinea national team follows his recent suspension in the wake of serious corruption accusations made against his country’s Football Association.

The news was confirmed by Teodora Nguema, the vice-president of Equatorial Guinea, on Tuesday night.

Nguema stated, “After discussions, captain Emilio Nsue López has declared his retirement from the national team. I acknowledge his contributions over the 12 years he has represented the Nzalang Nacional and wish him success in his future endeavours.”

Reports indicate that last week, the striker made shocking revelations against the Equatorial Guinea Football Association, alleging that the organization had misappropriated bonuses and fees amounting to €1 million (R20 million) following the team’s AFCON campaign.

The striker scored five goals during AFCON in the Ivory Coast, securing the tournament’s Golden Boot.
