Ghana will once again have no representative at the CAF Women’s Champions League after Ampem Darkoa Ladies suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Nigeria’s Edo Queens in the final of the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers on Saturday.
Ampem Darkoa lost 4-1 on penalties after the two sides played out a 2-2 draw after extra time.
Ghana took an early lead after just three minutes when Beline Nyarko finished off a move set up by Milot Pokuaa.
Edo Queens responded almost immediately, scoring a minute later to restore parity.
Ampem Darkoa continued to control possession after the break and created several opportunities before being awarded a controversial penalty in the 71st minute.
Nyarko stepped up and converted to complete her brace and put the Ghanaian champions back in front.
However, Edo Queens struck again in the 93rd minute to level the score at 2-2 and force the match into a penalty shootout.
The Nigerian champions held their nerve from the spot, scoring their first three penalties. Ampem Darkoa missed their opening two attempts, and although Nyarko converted their third, Edo Queens scored their fourth to seal the victory.
The defeat means Ghana will miss the CAF Women’s Champions League for the third consecutive season.
Edo Queens, meanwhile, have been crowned champions of the 2026 WAFU B qualifiers and secured the zone’s sole qualification ticket to the CAF Women’s Champions League, which will be staged later this year.
It will be Edo Queens’ second appearance at the continental competition after their debut in 2024.
