Ghana has one of the rapidly growing economies in West Africa. A report from Trading Economics shows that Ghana had a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $4.98 billion in 2000 and it rose to $66.98 billion in 2019. The country earns a huge percentage of its revenue from agriculture.

But digital technology makes a significant contribution to its economy. In this article, we discuss esports and online casino gaming, and how they are promoting IT development in Ghana.

The State of Esports in Ghana
The number of Ghanaian youth who are interested in professional competitive gaming has soared in the recent past. But, availability and costs limit their access to certain online games. Increased availability of esports and casino games has improved their involvement in the gaming industry. For example, the growth in esports led to the formation of the African eSports Championships in 2019 and the Ghana eSports Association (GeSA) in 2016.

Gamers need high internet connection speeds and reliable connections to compete with players from other countries. Ghana had close to 11.7 million internet users as of 2019 and an average download speed of 3.2 Mbps. The digital distribution of video games has increased their efficiency and affordability compared to physical purchases. Many gamers in Ghana like playing online slots at popular casinos. Online casinos in the country are more popular than brick-and-mortar casinos. They offer a variety of online video games that Android and iOS devices can run due to their small download sizes. Cleopatra and 88 Fortunes are some of the renowned slots games in Ghana.

Esports and casino gaming have increased competition in the gambling industry in Ghana. High technological availability has played a key role in their growth.  Although the old network systems in Ghana couldn't keep up to the high demands of bandwidth required to play these esports when they were first introduced in the country, the growth of the casino industry has expanded the potential of the video game market in the country. Gamers want to play more exciting games. This has led to the establishment of more Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to meet the demand in esports and casino gaming among other online recreational activities. The more the youth of Ghana show interest in esports, the more service providers engineer data and bandwidth packages to support.

The demand for sophisticated gaming hardware in Ghana has also increased of late. Sportsbooks and online casinos have increased their investment in technology infrastructure thus decreasing their operating costs. This excitement has increased engagement in online gaming in Ghana, as the demand for esports and other online games continue to increase.

Ghana has lenient gambling regulations that allow foreign betting firms to venture into the local gaming market. This has challenged ISPs to increase internet connection speeds to broaden their client base.

Online casino gaming and esports are the main forms of digital entertainment in Ghana. The gambling industry in the West African country has undergone many technological advancements over the recent past. Ghana will start generating more revenue from digital technology soon. The youth form over half of its esports and casino gaming market.
