Ghana Premier League matchday 24 wrap: Samartex reclaims top spot, Hearts of Oak stunned at home

Samartex moved back to the top of the Ghana Premier League table after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Medeama in the Western derby on Sunday.

Francis Gyetuah's first half strike was all that the Timber giants needed to dislodge Nations FC from the summit of the table.

The win ensures Samartex move up on 45 points, two more than closest challengers,  Nations FC and put them in firm control of challenging for the Premier League title.

Hearts of Oak 0-1 Bibiani Gold Stars

A goalkeeping howler from Sharif Shuaib gifted 10-man Bibiani Gold Stars a famous 1-0 win at Hearts of Oak - their first ever win against the Accra giants in its history.

The youngster, who impressed in post for the Phobians, will be crestfallen after his innocuous shot ricochet off Amankwah Frank, eventually placing an easy ball on the path of Mawuli Wayo to slot home the only goal of the match.

Gold Stars goalkeeper Ernest Kusi delivered a text book save at the death to deny the Phobians at least a point and pile pressure on coach Abubakar Ouattara.

Hearts have now lost twice, drawn twice and won once in their last five matches- leaving them 10th on the table with 32 points.

Nsoatreman FC 0-0 Berekum Chelsea 

Nsoatreman FC and Berekum Chelsea shared the spoils in an entertaining Bono derby at the Professor Nana Koromansah Park on Sunday.

The home side failed to complete the double over their regional rivals after beating them 1-0 in the corresponding fixture back in October, 2023.

Nsoatreman still remain in 7th position on 34 points, one point behind the Bibires who are in 5th position on the league standings.

Karela United 1-0 Heart of Lions

Defender Rashid Alhassan scored on the stroke of full time to hand Karela United a vital 1-0 win over Heart of Lions as they fight to stay afloat.

The centre-back grabbed the headlines on 90 minute to deliver victory for the home side at the Naa Sheriga Sports Centre in Nalerigu.

The visitors will feel downhearted after Mustapha Yakubu fluffed a crucial first half penalty.

Lions remain in the relegation trap-net and will need to punch above their weight to avoid the drop with 10 matches left to end the season.

Aduana Stars 3-1 Real Tamale United

A Sam Adams hat-trick propelled Aduana Stars to a thrilling 3-1 win over basement club Real Tamale United to keep their title pursuit intact.

The Fire Club responded in an impressive fashion after a stumbling back-to-back defeats to Medeama and Accra Great Olympics.

Adams opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute,  before converting a penalty in each half to cut the visitors into pieces at the Nana Agyemang Badu I Stadium.

RTU pulled one back just before the half-time break through forward Owusu Afriyie, who scored his 7th goal of the campaign.

Aduana are within six points of leaders Samartex while Real Tamale United are languishing at the bottom of the table.

Nations FC 1-0 Great Olympics

Nations FC kept pace with Samartex at the top of the table with a crucial 1-0 win against Great Olympics at home on Saturday.

Razak Simpson's stupendous stoppage-time free-kick handed the Premier League new boys a precious win at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.

Nations are just two point behind leaders Samartex in what appears a two-way title chase.

Bechem United 0-0 Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko ended a streak of four consecutive defeats by picking a point at Bechem United on Saturday - leaving the Ghanaian giants 8th on the table.

Dr Prosper Nartey Ogum charges eased the pressure on the team after picking at least a point on the road.

United are one point above Asante Kotoko with 10 games left to spare.

Accra Lions 1-0 Bofoakwa Tano

Accra Lions continued their fine start to the second half of the season with a routine 1-0 win over Bofoakwa Tano in Accra on Saturday.

Seidu Sadat's first half strike was enough for the dominant Lions against the relegation threatened side at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The win has lifted Lions into the top-four while Bofoakwa are gasping for redemption with 10 matches left to end the 2023-24 Premier League season.
