Ghana weightlifting team arrives after a successful championship

The victorious national weightlifting team, Black Cranes, arrived in Ghana on Monday from the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth and Commonwealth Junior and Seniors Weightlifting competitions held in Penang, Malaysia.

The team managed to win four medals at the competition and were met at the Kotoka International Airport by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Deputy General Secretary of National Sports Authority, Mr Saka Acquaye and individuals in the sporting fraternity and the public.

The team included,Forrester Osei, Christian Amoah who both won gold and Richmond Osarfo who was silver and bronze winner.

Amoah, won the first medal in the Commonwealth Seniors’ Championship in the 85kg where he was able to snatch 121kg, clean and jerk 150kg to make a total of 271kg which earned him a gold medal.

Osei also won the country’s second gold medal at the same event in the 94kg category after snatching 138kg, clean and jerk 172kg to make a total of 310kg.  That was also his first medal for the country.

Osarfo, who was participating in his first major competition also won silver in the 94kg category of the IWF Youth World Championship after making snatch 120kg, clean and jerk 160kg and a total of 280kg.

Mr. Vanderpuye congratulated them for their efforts and asked that they continue to do well to make the nation proud.

President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation(GWF), Ben Nonoo-Mensah asked for more corporate support as he is optimistic the sport will win more medals for Ghana in the Olympic Games.
