Youth and Sports Minister, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has disclosed the ministry decided on using local base players for the AFCON qualifies against Rwanda due to monetary constraints.

Speaking to GBC’s Agatha Asamoah on ‘Behind the News’ show, the honourable Member of Parliament noted it would be wasteful expenditure to fly down foreign based players for the qualifier as the result of the game had no bearing on the country’s AFCON participation.

“The ministry does not have the budget to support this particular match,” he stressed.

Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye also added that there was need to cater for the needs of other sporting disciplines. “Due to the need for us to put up resources to serve other competing demands of sports, the issue is that we have already qualified so the result of these match will not affect our qualification.

“We can give that money to cater for the Black Queens in order to go compete in the World Women’s Under 17 Championship and also the Black Stars upcoming game in October.”

The minister also intimated some other bills have to be footed for aside the plane ticket. “The ticket component is not only the budget, we talking about hotel, feeding and possible winning bonuses.”
