Sweden thumped Mexico by 3-0 to ensure their progression to the knockout phase at the expense of Germany at the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Germany failed to beat South Korea which bows them out the tournament as far as Russia 2018 World cup is concern.

The showdown kick-started with Jesus Gallardo booking in less than 20 seconds for a foul on Toivonen making it become the fastest yellow card in the World cup.

In the early stage, Sweden dictated the tempo of the game and looked very dangerous on set pieces.

At the halfway part of the game, Sweden were denied a penalty from a handball incident. The referee headed to the screen, looked at a potential handball against Hernandez and concluded Hernandez did not handle the ball with intent.

Sweden continued their high pressing football when Ochoa was called to action by Berg who struck the ball towards the roof of the net. The first half ended barren.

In the early stages of the second half, Sweden broke the deadlock through Augustinsson who from about 10 yards volleyed the ball into the net, Sweden got the breakthrough.

Few minutes later,  Moreno fouled Berg in the box and the referee pointed straight to the spot. The captain, Granqvist stepped up and blasted it into the top left corner.

Sweden killed any hopes of Mexico getting back into the game by adding a third through an own goal. Alvarez missed an attempted clearance and slotted the ball into the back of his own net for an own goal.
