World Cup 2022Q: South Africa stuns lacklustre Black Stars to pick first win

South Africa have recorded their first win in the ongoing qualifiers for the World Cup 2022 after a slim win over the Black Stars.

Bafana Bafana secured a 1-0 win over the Black stars courtesy Bongokuhle Hlongwane's second-half strike on Monday.

The Maritzburg United player tapped from a low cross to aid his side pick up the maximum points at the FNB Stadium.

The win has seen them leapfrogged the Black Stars to go top of the table with 4 points.

In a game of many errors committed by the Black Stars they were lucky to leave Johannesburg with only a single conceded despite their insipid display.

Ghana escaped in the 32nd minute after Richard Ofori failed to deal with a free-kick and the South Africans also couldn't score from the rebound.

Coach Hugo Broos' side breached Ghana defence in the 37th minute after Peercy Tau connected home from a cross but the goal was chalked offside.

The Black Stars did not create a single chance in the first half. 

After the restart, goalkeeper Richard Ofori dropped a clanger within a minute after he allowed a loose cross to pass through his legs but he was lucky the South Africa striker Evidence Makgopa fluffed his lines from 2 yards.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane broke the hearts of Ghanaians to put South Africa ahead in the 83rd minute. Bafana Bafana stayed resolute at the back to pick up the maximum points.

In all the Black Stars did not have a shot on target.

The last time both teams met at the same Stadium in March in the AFCON qualifiers it ended 1-1.
