Zambian female FIFA referee Leah Namukonde dies

Female FIFA referee Leah Namukonde has died from injuries in hospital after a road traffic accident in Luanshya on Saturday, 27 October 2018 evening.

Earlier on Saturday, she was the fourth official at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium during the final Super Division fixture between Buildcon and Power Dynamos won 1-0 by the Kitwe giants.

The National Olympics Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) confirmed the death of Leah Namukonde on their Facebook page;

“It is with the deepest regret and a collective broken heart that we confirm our Board member, Leah Namukonde, has lost passed on in the early hours of today, 31-Oct-2018.  The primary thoughts of everyone at the NOCZ are with the Namukonde family and the families of all those in the sports circle at this time of unspeakable loss. In Leah, the world has lost a great woman, kind hardworking who always worked with a smile on her face”

Namukonde was one of two Zambian women on the international FIFA panel. The other being Gladys Lengwe. She had been on the FIFA panel since 2016.
