Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that China will now allow all goods from Ghana to enter the Chinese market with 0% tariffs.

Speaking after high-level talks with China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, Mr. Ablakwa described the agreement as “productive and impactful.” He revealed the new tariff-free deal will cover 100% of Ghana’s export goods, aiming to boost trade, create jobs, and support local entrepreneurs.

“China is already Ghana’s biggest trading partner,” Mr. Ablakwa said. “Last year, our trade volume reached over US$11 billion. This new move will strengthen that partnership even more.”

The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting held alongside the ongoing China-Africa Summit in Changsha, China.

In addition to the tariff announcement, the two countries also discussed key projects to support Ghana’s development. These include plans to build an electric car manufacturing plant in Ghana, using the country’s rich lithium deposits, and industrial projects linked to developing Ghana’s bauxite into a full aluminium industry with the help of modern rail infrastructure.

Mr. Ablakwa added that Ghana and China will soon sign a Special Economic Partnership Agreement to formalise and deepen their cooperation.

He praised the continued friendship between the two nations, saying, “President Mahama’s government is using diplomacy to transform Ghana.

Leaders like Kwame Nkrumah and Chairman Mao would be proud of how far Ghana-China relations have come, 65 years after they began.”
