Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson says Ghana has regained the confidence of international investors, with the global capital market now inviting the country to borrow following improvements in the economy.
Speaking in Parliament, Ato Forson attributed the renewed investor confidence to what he described as the Mahama administration's prudent management of the economy. He noted that under the previous Akufo-Addo administration, Ghana was unable to access the international capital market.
Despite the renewed interest from investors, the Finance Minister said the government is not in a hurry to return to the international market to raise funds.
According to him, major macroeconomic indicators have improved significantly as a result of sound economic management and fiscal discipline.
"The progress Ghana is recording today did not happen by chance. It is superior economic management," Dr Forson told Parliament.
Dr Forson said the Mahama administration inherited an economy that was in a difficult state, characterised by reckless spending, excessive borrowing and a sharp depreciation of the cedi.
"President Mahama took over an economy with reckless spending, excessive borrowing, and lack of accountability. President Mahama took over an economy that was on its knees," he said.
The Finance Minister cautioned against a return to policies that could trigger another economic crisis, arguing that the 2022 crisis resulted from poor policy decisions, excessive borrowing and fiscal indiscipline.
He stressed that the government remains committed to maintaining economic stability while avoiding a return to the period of severe cedi depreciation.
"The 2022 economic crisis was not merely an accident but the result of poor policy choices, reckless spending and excessive borrowing," he said.
