After several months of waiting, the National Telecommunications Authority has finally approved the merger proposal of Airtel and Tigo Ghana.
The development follows an earlier disclosure in the media that the merger was still awaiting the approval of the NCA on the basis that the agency was still being supplied the requirements for the plan.

Reports however indicate a memo to employees of both mobile telecommunication companies signed by the Managing Director of Tigo Ghana Roshi Rotman says the operators have been offered a conditional approval for the merger.

“We received a conditional approval from the National Communications Authority on the planned Tigo Ghana and Airtel Ghana merger”, it stated.

If successful, the move will bring to an end a process that began since March this year. The merger will likely displace vodafone as the second largest telecommunications operator in the country after MTN, which currently leads the industry in Ghana.

However, while this is obviously the biggest merger witnessed by the country's telecommunications industry there is still no specific details on what impact it may have on employees - particularly at the top management level of both organizations.
