Trade Minister inaugurates Cement Manufacturing Development Committee

The Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr. Kobina Tahir Hammond, has inaugurated a new committee to guide the development and expansion of Ghana’s cement manufacturing sector.

The nine-member committee will play a key role in ensuring the industry operates effectively and upholds quality standards.

One of the committee’s primary responsibilities is to offer recommendations to the Minister on the approval of an application for registration and licensing of a cement company.

In addition, the committee is expected to develop audit processes and perform frequent audits to ensure compliance with the Regulations. It would also review, assess, approve local content and participation plans, as well as reports from cement manufacturing companies.

Among other responsibilities, the committee has been entrusted with undertaking public education and sensitization initiatives to meet the aim of the Regulations.

In his speech, Mr Hammond highlighted the ongoing expansion of Ghana’s cement industry and noted the importance of establishing a proper oversight body to regulate production, and packaging practices throughout the country.

On his part, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Alex Dodoo, expressed profound appreciation to the minister and pledged that, they will work hard to deliver for the benefits of Ghanaians.

Members of the committee were drawn from some selected key institutions namely, Ghana Standards Authority, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation; Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana Institution of Engineering, Association of Ghana Industries, Chamber of Cement Manufacturers of Ghana and an Expert in the manufacture of cement.
