The National Film Authority (NFA) has announced a new brand name for the local movie industry - Blackstar Films.

The new name was outdoored on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, in Accra.

The rebranding by the Ghana Film Authority (GFA) has sparked controversies among industry players

Chairman of the Film Classification Committee, Socrates Sarfo in an interview on Peace FM said the renaming was unnecessary.

He explained that film industries all over the world do not go on meetings to choose their brand names hence the decision was needless and should not be taken into consideration.

Actress Gloria Sarfo also raised questions on the new name and gave shocking reactions.

“What is the name of the Ghana film industry again? Someone, please wake me up...I’m still dreaming”, Gloria Sarfo wrote on her Instagram page.

A statement on the National Film Authority's (NFA) Facebook page on the launch of the name said the rebranding was to make Ghana a content and co-production hub.

“As the Nation of Ghana steps up and out to attract the world to Ghana in its drive to position Ghana as a content and co-production hub, as well as a shooting destination, sentiments from Ghanaians, called for a deliberate brand that speaks to the pathos and ethos of the Ghanaian people.”

“Black star Films” was picked from a total of 400 names that were suggested by the general public when the process for the rebrand started years ago.

Even though some are vehemently against the new name, others have accepted it in grand style.
